Improving diagnostic procedure and treatment in patients with non-epileptic seizures (NES)
The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence of patients with NES vs. NES and concomitant epilepsy in an epilepsy centre and to present a diagnostic algorithm. We collected and reviewed the data of 322 patients consecutively referred to the adult ward of our epilepsy centre in 1 year. The results of our study reveal that 44 (14%) of all patients referred had NES. Of these, nine proved...
متن کاملPsychogenic non-epileptic seizures.
Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) need to be differentiated from epileptic seizures as the management varies for both. Presence of tongue biting, falling and urinary incontinence favors a diagnosis of epileptic seizures. We report two children with features suggestive of epileptic seizures that were eventually diagnosed as PNES with the help of video-EEG monitoring.
متن کاملPlasma prolactin concentrations following epileptic and pseudoseizures.
Serial plasma prolactin levels were measured following eighteen generalised seizures, ten partial seizures and eight pseudoseizures. Prolactin levels were elevated following generalised seizures, but were normal following the other seizure types. Plasma prolactin levels may, therefore, be helpful in differentiating between generalised and pseudoseizures. The optimal time for estimating the prol...
متن کاملNon-epileptic seizures: delayed diagnosis in patients presenting with electroencephalographic (EEG) or clinical signs of epileptic seizures
The clinical differentiation between epileptic seizures (ES) and non-epileptic seizures (NES) is often difficult and mostly based on the presence or absence of widely recognized features of ES such as tongue biting, falling, incontinence or concomitant epileptic abnormalities in the electroencephalogram (EEG). We retrospectively analysed the records of all patients referred to our Epilepsy Cent...
متن کاملCardiac arrhythmias during or after epileptic seizures
Seizure-related cardiac arrhythmias are frequently reported and have been implicated as potential pathomechanisms of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). We attempted to identify clinical profiles associated with various (post)ictal cardiac arrhythmias. We conducted a systematic search from the first date available to July 2013 on the combination of two terms: 'cardiac arrhythmias' and ...
